Book Excerpt: Introduction

Perseverance: The Space Between Brokenness and Becoming

We don’t choose adversity. It comes.
Sometimes as a diagnosis.
Sometimes as heartbreak.
Sometimes as the loss of identity, security, or the life we thought we were building.
But we do choose what we do with it.
This book is about that choice.

Perseverance isn’t just about grit or toughness. It’s not the stoic “keep going” mantra or the performative resilience that shows up in social media quotes. It’s deeper. It’s the process of becoming—of integrating adversity into a more whole version of ourselves.

Over the course of my career in leadership and coaching, I’ve come to believe that perseverance is one of the most underexamined competencies in leadership. It’s also one of the most personal. It doesn't appear in most résumés or performance reviews, but it quietly defines how we show up when the stakes are high and the road ahead is unclear.

This book began with a personal shift. After receiving my Parkinson’s diagnosis, I was thrust into a new relationship with adversity—not as a coach helping others navigate difficulty, but as a human being suddenly living inside of it. I had to rewrite the story I was telling myself. Not just about illness, but about identity, vulnerability, and strength.

From that space, I started asking others about their journeys. What follows are a series of real, unvarnished stories from people who have faced adversity in its many forms—cancer, trauma, grief, identity struggles, burnout, loss—and have not just survived, but grown.

Each chapter features one voice. One journey. One honest look at what it means to walk through fire and come out—changed.

And at the end of each chapter, you’ll find insights and tools:

🧠 A mindset shift
🔍 A core insight
✅ A practical, real-world takeaway
🧭 A reflection or journaling question
✍️ A brief prompt to apply the lesson in your life or leadership

This book is designed for leaders, learners, and anyone trying to make sense of hard things. You may be reading this during a storm. Or in the quiet after one. Or in anticipation of what’s ahead. Wherever you are, my hope is that you’ll find companionship here. Not in answers. But in truth. And in the courage it takes to keep becoming.

Welcome to Perseverance.
